Admiralty Islands
To
reach the Admiralty Islands from CFBKYC, turn to port out of Deadman's
Bay and sail east on the St Lawrence River along the shore of Howe Island.
The Admiralty Islands are at the eastern end of Howe Island, more or less
opposite Brakey Bay.
Aubrey Island, Mermaid Island and Beaurivage Island are all part of the
St Lawrence Islands National Park system. Aubrey Island, marked by a conspicuous
NAVAID, has deep docks where indicated on the photo. The docks on Aubrey
opposite Mermaid are shallow - power boats only, please. The docks on
Mermaid Island, shown here, are deep and not disturbed by the wakes of
vessels transiting to Gananoque.
The entrance to the Wanderer's Channel is seen in the background.
There
is a pleasant anchorage SE of Beaurivage Island which is reasonably well
sheltered from all directions. If the wind pipes up, however, be prepared
to find yourself on a lee shore! Use lots of chain, and look on your chart
for the electrical cable running near Beaurivage.
On long weekends, you may not find a spot. Usually, though, there will
only be a handful of cruisers. You may even find yourself alone, as in
this photo, taken from Beaurivage Island.
From any of these spots you can use your inflatable to explore Half Moon
Bay, McDonald Island and the Wanderer's Channel. The bolder may wish to
make a dash into Gananoque. In any case, keep a sharp eye out for the
tour boats that frequent both the main channel and the Wanderer's Channel.
Half Moon Bay is located on the south side of Bostwick Island - away
from the Wanderer's Channel. Regular interdenominational church services
are held there during the summer. It is easy to get there in an inflatable
via the channel east of Bostwick Island.
The Wanderer's Channel threads its way through the Admiralty Islands
to Gananoque. It is easily navigated in a keel boat.
